Damage
What products reduce the amount I have to pay if the vehicle is damaged during the rental?
If you have Damage Waiver (CDW) and the vehicle, keys, any accessories or any vehicle documents are damaged, the amount you have to pay for the damage will be reduced to no more than the excess stated on your rental agreement meaning you will pay for the cost of repair or replacement, whichever is less, for each separate incident of damage, plus a damage processing fee of 390.00 NOK. If you can show the damage was not in any way your fault or due to your negligence, we will refund these costs to you. If you can show the damage was less than we said, we will refund you the difference.
How much is the excess?
This is stated on your rental agreement, and also in your booking confirmation email.
How do I get Damage Waiver?
In most cases, Damage Waiver is provided with the vehicle and included in the rate as standard. If it is included, it will be stated on your rental agreement and in your booking confirmation email. If it is not included in the rate as standard, the price depends on the vehicle you are renting and the place you are renting it from. But you can expect it to cost between 110.00 NOK and 300.00 NOK a day. Damage Waiver is mandatory in Norway.

Yes, Super Damage Insurance(SCDI, Super Collision Damage Insurance and Windscreen) is an excess reduction product which reduces your excess to zero. The price depends on the vehicle and location, but you can expect it to costs between 207.00 NOK and 242.00 NOK a day.
What happens if I damage any optional extras I rent from you?
If any optional extras are damaged, you have to pay for the cost of replacement, or their estimated repair costs in addition to the rental fee.

Damage to people and their property
What do I have to pay if I injure someone whilst driving?
Third Party Liability (TPL) cover is provided with the vehicle as standard. This means that if you have an accident in our vehicle and you injure someone, including any of your passengers, or you damage anything which belongs to them, you will not have to pay any of their costs. Third Party Liability cover does not cover any death or injury suffered by the driver of our vehicle or any damage to personal items in our vehicle.
Are there any times when third party liability cover would not apply?
If the law requires us to provide you with third party liability cover, the minimum cover required by law will still apply but we, or our insurer, may seek to recover our costs from you if the accident was caused by:

How do I get Personal Accident Insurance?

How do I get Super Personal Accident Insurance?

What will you pay if I do not have Personal Accident Insurance?
If the driver of the vehicle is involved in an accident and is injured or dies, we will not pay their costs. If any personal items in the vehicle are damaged, lost or stolen, we will not pay for their repair or replacement.
For information, passengers are considered third parties and would benefit from the third party liability cover provided with the vehicle as standard.

Third party protection products
I have bought a protection product from an external provider, can I use it?
If you decide to buy cover from someone else, you will have to pay our full costs then you will need to make a claim with the external provider to get your money back. It is your responsibility to ensure you understand the terms of any cover you buy from an external provider and for any claim you make. We are unable to help you with your claim.
What payment cards do you accept?

Can I pay by cash?

What happens if I am late in making payment?
If you are late in paying us, interest will be calculated at least 8 % per year above the base lending rate of Norges Bank from time to time.

Do I need to bring my driving licence with me?
Yes. All drivers must bring all parts of their valid driving licence with them, please note that digital driving licences are not accepted. They must bring both their driving licence and either an international driving licence or an official English translation, by a notary, of their driving licence for any of the following situations:

Is there a minimum length I must have held my licence for?
Yes. All drivers must have held their licences for at least 1 year. If a licence does not show the driver has held it for the minimum period, then they must provide evidence, such as one of the following:

Unfortunately, any driver will not be able to drive our vehicles if they have any unspent driving convictions for:
Public liability insurance is in accordance with the insurance laws of the country. Customer may inquire at the time of rental for additional information of the benefits, conditions and acceptance.
Note: Some credit cards provide insurance coverage, with certain limitations, as a benefit of using the card to rent vehicles. The customer is advised to contact the card issuer before the rental. Any waiver must be discussed directly with the location upon arrival.
Within Norway there are certain areas which have congestion charging zones. This means you need to pay a fee if you wish to drive in certain areas on certain days and during certain times. In addition, there are toll roads and toll bridges which require you to pay a fee if you wish to use them. We recommend you pay these in advance where possible in order to ensure you will not incur a fine.
We recommend you check the Internet to find out about any restricted areas before you travel. Websites such as www.autopass.no/en/autopass provide useful information. If the rental location is in or near a restricted area, we will tell you about it when you pick up the vehicle. We are unable to tell you about any other restricted areas.
If a fine or charge is sent to us because you haven't paid a charge or complied with the law, we will take payment for:
Keeping the vehicle interior clean
Please note the following:
No Show/Cancellation: If you fail to rent and do not cancel your passenger car reservation there will be a fee of NOK 750.
You must cancel your van reservation at least 7 days prior to the rental to avoid a fee of 50% of estimated rental charges. If you fail to cancel your van reservation we will charge the entire amount of estimated rental charges.
Outside Office Hours: A fee will apply for rentals outside office hours or when the location is closed.
Airport locations require flight number and arrival time.
Drivers License:
A valid driving license from the renter's country of residence must be presented in person at the time of rental
This license must have been held for at least one year prior to the rental pick-up date.
A local driving license must also be obtained at the time of vehicle pick up by drivers renting groups L and P (passenger van and truck).
Customer must contact the counter directly for the special requirements and reservations involving rental of groups L and P (passenger vans and truck).
Drivers should be prepared to pay for any required additional documentation at the time of issue.
All forms of documentation must be issued to the same person, in the same name, and presented together at the time of rental.
How old do I need to be to drive a rental vehicle?
To drive our vehicles, you and all of your drivers need to be at least 19 years old and have held a full, valid driving licence for at least 1 year at the start of your rental. A higher minimum age limit may apply to certain vehicles.
How do I know if there are minimum age restrictions on my rental?
When you book, you will be told if there are any minimum age restrictions for the vehicle you request. If you are not sure, please check your booking confirmation email or call the reservations team.
I am under 25, do I need to pay a young driver surcharge?
If you or any of your drivers are under 25 when you pick up the vehicle, you will each have to pay a young driver surcharge. The cost for this will depend on where you’re picking the vehicle up from, but you can expect it to be between 162,50 NOK and 195 NOK, per day, for each driver.
If you rent the vehicle for more than 10 days, you will only be charged for a maximum of 10 days and get cover for the duration of your rental, up to 31 days.
Are there any maximum age restrictions?
No, as long as you have held a full, valid driving licence for at least 1 year.
I am over 75, do I need to provide extra information or pay a senior driver surcharge?
No, as long as you have held a full, valid driving licence for at least 1 year.
Approximate total includes base rate, taxes, and surcharges. Items such as coupon discounts, child safety seats, winterization fee from 01Nov - 30Apr and gas are NOT included in the estimated total. Optional coverages and one-way fees are subject to tax in certain locations. This tax is not reflected in the Estimated Total.
Estimated total is subject to change based upon exchange rates at the time of rental.
Should I bring the vehicle back with a full tank of fuel?
Yes. The vehicle will normally be supplied with a full tank of fuel. You must return it to us with the same amount of fuel it had in it when you picked it up, usually a full tank, as shown on the factory-installed fuel gauge. We recommend you fill up as close to the return location as you can on the return date, and keep the receipt to show us. If you do not return the vehicle with a full tank and you can not show us a receipt for fuel, we will charge you.
Fuel Options
I plan to travel more than 300 kilometres, and want peace of mind, do you have a fuel option for me?
Yes, with Fuel Up Front you pay for a full tank of fuel, based on the manufacturers stated fuel tank capacity for your vehicle plus our costs of refuelling the vehicle for you. Then you just return the vehicle with whatevers left in the tank (even if it is virtually empty) so long as the engine still runs.
Can I get Fuel up Front at any time?
No, if you want to take advantage of Fuel Up Front, you must ask for it during the booking process or when you pick up the vehicle.
I plan to travel less than 10 kilometres, do I still need to fill up?
Yes, often the fuel gauges stills look full so we ask you to fill up the tank near to the return location and show us a copy of the receipt.
What are my options if I do not return the vehicle full and have not bought Fuel up Front?
Pay on Return will apply if you have driven more than 5 kilometres and:
How do I calculate the cost of Pay on Return?
You pay for fuel based on the factory-installed fuel gauge rounded down to the nearest eighth (1/8) of a tank. This is based on the manufacturers stated fuel tank capacity.
We charge a mark up of up to 20% of the fuel price, for Norway, at the end of the rental period in addition to a refuelling charge of 250 NOK. The price per litre will be stated on your rental agreement. This charge covers our cost of driving to the nearest petrol station at short notice, and potentially delaying the next customers rental.
Electric Vehicles
How much battery charge should I return an electric vehicle with?
You must return the vehicle with at least a 70% battery charge, or the same % battery charge as it had at the time of pick-up.
What am i charged if I fail to return an electric vehicle with the required 70% battery charge, or the same % battery charge as it had at the time of pick-up?
We charge a fixed amount dependent on the battery life showing on the factory-installed battery gauge. This is the Pay on Return rate. the amounts charged are set out below:

Charging Solution
Yes, when renting electric cars, a service called Northe is included. Northe brings together several charging operators in one solution. The solution can be used voluntarily by using the charging chip attached to the car key. With the charging chip, the electric car is charged at the charging stations associated with Northe, at market price plus an administration fee of 25%. If the charging key is not returned at the end of the tenancy, a fee will be charged. The customer will be responsible for all charging that is carried out until the lease is finally closed. This means that if the car is handed over outside opening hours, or in other ways which mean that there is a period of time between handing over and until the charging pad is in our possession, then the renter is liable for any consumption. If you would like further information, please contact one of our rental offices.
ID requirements
Do I need to bring proof of identification?
Yes, you must bring:
You may also need to bring proof of where you live. This could include a recent utility bill or bank statement. If your driving licence shows your address, we will accept it as proof of your address.
Other requirements
Will I need to give a pre-authorisation?
Yes, you must give us a pre-authorisation on your payment card before we release the vehicle to you. A pre-authorisation holds money in your account.
What do I need to do to give a pre-authorisation?
You will need to give us a payment card in your own name that has enough money available on it.
How much is the pre-authorisation?
The amount of the pre-authorisation taken on pick-up of the rental vehicle is calculated as follows:

* The "vehicle rental price" includes the vehicle rental cost and all optional extras you've requested, calculated at the start of the rental based on the intended length of the rental. For the avoidance of any doubt, any "Pay at Location" amount you owe in relation to the vehicle rental (including any optional extras) will be included as part of the pre-authorisation and will be charged to you at the end of the rental (using the card provided for the purposes of the pre-authorisation, unless agreed otherwise).
** If you buy our "Fuel Up Front" product, we will reduce the GBP 300 (or if applicable, the equivalent amount in your local currency) by the amount we charge you for the "Fuel Up Front" product
The GBP 300 (or if applicable, the equivalent amount in your local currency) is included as part of the pre-authorisation in case we have to charge you at the end of the rental for any of the following:
i. costs to refuel the vehicle (where relevant);
ii. additional rental charges in circumstances where you fail to return the vehicle or any optional extras at the end of the agreed rental period (or to the agreed return location);
iii. any additional charges or fines you incur relating to your use of the vehicle (which we have been notified of prior to you returning the vehicle, which will include, for example, charges relating to traffic violations); and/or
iv. costs incurred as a result of exceeding any relevant mileage restrictions.
Where the pre-authorisation we take does not cover the charges you incur, we will request you make a further payment for the additional amounts owed.
Can I let anyone else drive?
Yes, but only if we have approved them. You must not let anyone else drive the vehicle.
We charge a fee for every Additional Driver we allow to drive the vehicle. The price depends on the location you are renting from, but you can expect it to be between 37.50 NOK and 40.00 NOK per day, per driver.
If you rent the vehicle for more than 10 days, you will only be charged for a maximum of 10 days and get cover for the duration of your rental, up to 31 days.
All additional drivers must meet our age, driving licence and ID requirements.
If any additional driver is outside of our age restrictions, we will also charge a driver surcharge.
Do you offer a Meet and Greet service?
No, unfortunately we are unable to offer a Meet and Greet service at this time.
Can I pick up the vehicle outside your normal opening hours?
Yes, some airport and train station rental locations offer an out of hours pick-up service where you can collect the vehicle and any optional extras outside the rental locations normal opening hours.
The out of hours pick up fee is given upon on request.
You must give us at least 1 days notice to organise out of hours pick-up. We may be able to provide the service at shorter notice, but you will need to check with the Reservations team.
My rental has a mileage allowance. I have driven more than the allowance, how much will I pay for excess mileage
Many of our vehicles are provided with unlimited mileage. If a mileage allowance applies, it will be stated on your rental agreement and in your booking confirmation email. If you go over the mileage allowance, the price depends on the vehicle and location, but you can expect it to costs between 2.00 NOK and 15.00 NOK for every kilometre you have driven over the allowance. Your excess mileage charge will be stated on your rental agreement.
Can I smoke in the vehicle?
No, it is against the law to smoke in public places in Norway. The vehicle is considered a public place so you are not allowed to smoke in it. If we believe anyone has smoked in the vehicle during the rental period, a specialist cleaning charge will apply.
Are there any roads or zones where I need to pay a fee before I can enter?
Yes, certain areas, such as e.g. entering Oslo, entering Bærum, other cities, have congestion charging zones meaning you need to pay a fee if you wish to drive in certain areas, on certain days and during certain times. In addition, there are toll roads and toll bridges which require you to pay a fee if you wish to use them. If you do not pay these charges before you enter such areas or use such roads or bridges, you will incur a fine.
We recommend you check the Internet to find out where you will be charged a toll fee before you travel. Websites such as www.autopass.no/en/autopass provide useful information. If the rental location is in or near a restricted area, we will tell you about it when you pick up the vehicle. We are unable to tell you about any other restricted areas.
I have been caught speeding, and/or did not pay a parking charge, what will I have to pay?
You are responsible for all fines and charges issued as a result of you or your additional drivers using the vehicle. Fines and charges could include:

I have left the interior of the vehicle very dirty and made it smell. Will I be charged to clean it?
Yes, if the interior of the vehicle is especially muddy, dirty, stained or smelly, and our standard cleaning procedure will not fix it, you will be charged a Specialist Cleaning Charge of 3750.00 NOK.
Roadside Assistance
What happens if I break down because of a mechanical failure?
All our vehicles are maintained to the manufacturers standards, and they are roadworthy when you pick them up so mechanical failure in our vehicles is rare. So long as you are using the vehicle in a country we have agreed to, we provide roadside assistance or recovery free of charge. You can only use our roadside assistance provider to help you. You will find their contact details inside the vehicle.
What happens if I break down because of a non-mechanical failure or in another country?
You must tell us if you break down or have an accident. If you need roadside assistance, we will arrange this for you but you will have to pay for it. You will also be charged for any costs we incur getting the vehicle back on the road in the country of rental. This may include, but is not limited to:

What happens if I do not return the incident report form or European accident form?
If you are involved in an accident, or the vehicle, keys, any accessories, any vehicle documents or any optional extras are damaged, lost or stolen; you must complete and return an incident report form and if available, the European accident report form.
Can I pick up the vehicle from one rental location and return it to another?
Yes, some rental locations let you collect the vehicle and any optional extras from one rental location and return them to another.
How much is the One-Way fee?
The price depends on the rental location. If you want to pick up the vehicle and return it to a different location in the same country, you can expect it to be between 200.00 NOK and 21 500.00 NOK. If you want to pick up the vehicle in one country and drop it off in another country, you can expect it to be between 3125.00 NOK and 62 500.00 NOK.
How do I get a One-Way rental?
You can request a one-way rental when you book or you can ask for it when you get to the rental location.
If you asked for a one-way rental when you booked, the fee will be included in your rental price.
How much will it cost if I did not request a One-Way rental but return the vehicle to a different location?
You will be charged a one-way fee at the pay at location prices available on the day you return the vehicle.
International One Way is not allowed for Electric Cars. Exceptions: Sweden, Denmark and Finland.
Car seats
We offer baby, infant, child and booster seats.
A baby seat is typically suitable for a child from birth to 12 months old and weighing no more than 13 kilos.
An infant seat is typically suitable for a child aged 9 months to 4 years old and weighing between 9 and 18 kilos.
A child seat is typically suitable for a child aged 4 to 11 years old and weighing between 15 and 36 kilos.
A booster seat is typically suitable for a child aged 8 to 11 years and weighing between 20 and 45 kilos.
Our staff are not able to install the baby seats on your behalf but will be happy to show you how. But remember, it is always your responsibility to check the seat is fitted correctly before you drive away.

The fee for renting a seat is between NOK 250.00 and NOK 450.00 per day.
If the seat is damaged, lost or stolen, you will have to pay for a replacement. This is likely to cost up to NOK 6,500.00 on top of the hire fee. *
Winter tyres
In Norway it is compulsory for your vehicle to be fitted with Winter tyres. The vehicle will automatically be supplied with them and the fee will be included in your rental fee or contract.
If any tyres are damaged, lost or stolen, you will have to pay for a replacement pair. You can expect this to range from KR 10,000.00 to KR. 20,000.00 on top of the hire fee. If you can show the damage or loss was not in any way your fault or due to your negligence, we will refund this cost to you.
Ski Racks
Some rental locations offer ski racks. you can expect to pay NOK 800.00 per rental.
Ski racks cannot be fitted to all our vehicles, so you may need to upgrade if you need one. (Please look at the relevant vehicle categories mentioned on our webpage, Avis.no to ensure you are not disappointed) This may increase the price of the vehicle and any excess you may have to pay.
If the ski rack is damaged, lost or stolen, you'll have to pay for a replacement. *
This is likely to cost between NOK 2,000.00 and NOK 5,000.00 on top of the hire fee.
Please give us at least 72 hours' notice if you want to hire a ski rack. If you need it at shorter notice, please call the Reservations team
GPS/Itoorer
The fee for renting a GPS will depend on where you're renting but you can expect it to cost between NOK 80.00 and NOK 150.00 per day. If you rent the vehicle for more than 10 days, you’ll only be charged for a maximum of 10 days and get to use the GPS for the duration of your rental, up to 31 days.
If the GPS device is damaged, lost or stolen, you are responsible for the cost of the replacement, this is likely to cost NOK 2.500,00 on top of the hire fee. *
Please note: In some countries, including Norway, it is against the law to use a GPS that tells you where speed cameras are. If you rent a GPS from us, it will not give you speed camera information.
This provides the following options:
WFI - kr. 100 per day up to 10 days.
GPS - kr. 80 per day up to 10 days.
TCT - kr. 125 per day up to 10 days.
A GPS service and unlimited data, as well as other useful features you may need when travelling, including international calls when taking the TCT option.
We provide this service on behalf of a third party so you will need to read and agree to separate terms and conditions with, which will be signed by you on the device at the time of rental check out.
If you rent the vehicle for more than 10 days, you'll only be charged for a maximum of 10 days and get to use the device for the duration of your rental, up to 31 days.
If the Travel Companion Tablet is damaged, lost or stolen, you'll have to pay for a replacement. This is likely to cost from NOK 2,900.00 on top of the hire fee. If any of the accessories are lost, damaged or stolen, you will have to pay for a replacement. This is likely to cost between NOK 20.00 and NOK 100.00 on top of the hire fee. *
Toll charges
These are charges associated with the use and maintenance of public and private roads in Norway. These also apply in the same way to ferry crossings.
The price charged depends on where you drive and which roads you take.
We charge the full rate per toll passage, due to the administration of the AutoPass units and the service of forward billing the customer. As we provide this as a service, according to Norwegian law, we are required to add VAT. to the toll charges.
Please be aware that road tolls in Norway are imposed by various entities, each with their own fee structures and methods of charging. These fees can vary depending on factors such as vehicle size, environmental friendliness, and other parameters.
E-Toll Device
All rental locations offer an e-toll device that lets you drive through tolls without needing to stop and pay.
It automatically calculates all your tolls/ferry crossings and then at the end of your rental you will get an invoice.
PLEASE NOTE IT IS NOT ALLOWED TO REMOVE THE DEVICE FROM THE WINDSCREEN.
If it is found that the device has been removed, you will get the charges for the toll roads separately from your rental charges. It will also be accompanied by an administration fee of KR 600.00.
E-toll devices are registered to the rental vehicle and therefore are not allowed to be replaced by private E- toll devices.
If the E-Toll device is damaged, lost or stolen, you will have to pay for a replacement. This is likely to cost up to NOK 600.00 on top of the hire fee.
This service and any toll charges you incur will be invoiced to you after the vehicle is returned to us.
Mobile Wi-Fi
This provides unlimited data per day. We provide this service on behalf of a third party so you will need to read and agree to separate terms and conditions with, which will be signed by you on the device at the time of rental check out.
The fee for hiring Mobile Wi Fi is between NOK 125.00 and NOK 150.00 per day. If you rent the vehicle for more than 10 days, you’ll only be charged for a maximum of 10 days and get to use the device for the duration of your rental, up to 31 days.
If the Mobile Wi-Fi device is damaged, lost or stolen, you'll have to pay for a replacement. This is likely to cost between NOK 900.00 and NOK 1300.00 on top of the hire fee. *
* If you can show the damage or loss was not in any way your fault or due to your negligence, we will refund this cost to you.
The General Conditions provide more information about what happens if you want to extend your rental, or if you do not return the vehicle to us as agreed.
The late return processing fee is up to NOK 150.00 per day.
Unless we agree otherwise, you are only allowed to use the vehicle in most Central European countries:
You are not permitted to use the vehicle in some Eastern European Countries.
International travel outside Norway is permitted to certain countries but requires prior approval from the Avis rental station you picked up the vehicle from.

It is prohibited to drive our vehicles into Albania (AL), Azerbaijan (AZ), Bulgaria (BG), Bosnia and Herzegovina (BIH), Faroe Islands (FO), Greenland (GG) Belarus (BY), Cyprus (CY) , Estonia (EST), Georgia (GE), Greece (GR), Iceland (IS), Kazakhstan (KZ), Kosovo (RKS), Latvia (LV), Lithuania (LT), Malta (M), North Macedonia (MK), Moldova (MD), Montenegro (MNE), Romania (RO), Russia (RUS), Serbia (SRB), Turkey (TR), Ukraine (UA) and any country outside continental Europe.
If you are planning to drive across borders between Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland, you’ll be charged a Travel Europe fee of NOK 300.00 per day. If you rent the vehicle for more than 10 days, you’ll only be charged for a maximum of 10 days and get cover for the duration of your rental, up to 31 days.
Please note that if you are permitted to take the vehicle outside of Norway it is your responsibility to make sure you comply with legal requirements applicable in the relevant country/countries you travel in.
Travel Europe/Cross Border Fee
On the condition of paying the cross border fee set out below when you cross the borders of Norway (as defined above) into one or more of the permitted countries, your rental will be subject to a cross border fee of NOK 300 per day with a maximum charge of NOK 2000 per rental. The cross-border fee will apply only once for the duration of your rental, no matter how many times you cross borders between permitted countries.
Please note that the charge of Cross border Fee does not apply for driving inside Scandinavia (Sweden & Norway) & Finland
Please refer to the section ‘Where Can You Drive?” in the Rental Conditions for details on costs associated with failure to declare that you are driving the vehicle outside the country of rental. Any country not listed as a permitted country is an unpermitted country.
Rentals that start in Norway (as defined above) cannot be taken into an unpermitted country unless we expressly agree otherwise beforehand.
If it has come to our knowledge, at any time, that your rental vehicle has been taken into an unpermitted country without our prior agreement, we may, at our discretion, apply a fee of NOK 300 per day and void your selected optional extras where there is a claim (such as roadside assistance and additional insurance) that takes place in an unpermitted country.
Please note that if you are permitted to take the vehicle outside of Norway (as defined above), it is your responsibility to make sure you comply with legal requirements applicable in the relevant country/countries you travel in.
Avis right to compensation for any damage resulting from a breach of any of the above provisions remains unaffected.
