Kahului is a town on the island of Maui. The area is home to Kahului Airport (OGG), Maui’s biggest airport, as well as Kanaha Beach Park, Maui Arts & Cultural Center, and the island’s most popular shopping district.
The airport code OGG was created in 1957 by the Civil Aeronautics Authority (the earlier version of the Federal Aviation Administration). The code honors Captain Jimmy Hogg, a Hawaiian Airlines Pilot who first began his career in the 1930s. Hogg was the first pilot to make a commercial flight from Hawaii after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He also flew the first trans-Pacific flight for the airline in 1958.
Kahului Airport is on the northwest end of Maui, meaning travelers can easily pick up a rental car after landing and head straight to any destination on the island.
Kahului Airport is Maui’s main airport and the second most busy airport in Hawaii. The land occupies 1,391 acres and has two runways for domestic and international flights. Still, this airport is small in comparison to some of the busiest airports in the United States, such as Denver International Airport (34,000 acres) and Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (17,183).
