If you’re looking for a Texas road trip that embodies the spirit of the old west and includes historical sites, an old ghost town, and breathtaking views, you’ve found it. This is a road trip itinerary from San Antonio, Texas to the Chisos Mountains in Big Bend National Park. We’ve provided you with several places to visit along the way, but you can make the drive from the San Antonio International Airport to the national park in less than six hours.

We’ve only covered a few of the many road trip travel destinations in Texas, so don’t be afraid to take more detours along the way. If you’re planning an extensive trip and intend to be on the road for a month or more, check out our long-term car rentals for a more cost-effective mode of transportation. If you happen upon any toll roads in Texas, we’ve made things much more convenient for you with our car rental e-Toll service.

Rent a Car in San Antonio

Unlike some of our other road trip itineraries, this one doesn’t exactly call for an off-road vehicle. Choose a rental car that best suits you and your travel companions’ needs. Reserve your vehicle online and pick it up at Avis’ San Antonio Airport car rental location, or at any other San Antonio location. Once you’ve secured your road trip wheels, you may want to grab a bite to eat before you head out; you’ve got a long stretch of Texas highway ahead of you.

Psst! Not flying in at the San Antonio International Airport? No problem. Choose another Avis Car Rental in Texas and get the same deals and programs that you would at the airport location!

The Holland Hotel

209 W. Holland Ave.

Alpine, Texas 79830

After a long and lovely drive through the Western Texas roads, you’ll come to a place called Alpine. Here you’ll find the historic Holland Hotel—a preserved emblem of 1930’s hospitality. Whether you choose to stay a night in this old-timey inn drenched in southwestern-inspired decor is up to you, but you should at least stop by for a scrumptious meal in an old-fashioned dining room.

Terlingua

Not far from Alpine is the most famous ghost town in all of Texas: Terlingua. A trip to this old mining district will transport you back in time to the days of cowboys and outlaws in the Wild West. Visit a preserved trading post (which is now lined with shelves of Terlingua souvenirs), poke around some old abandoned structures, and dine at a historic saloon that was converted into the beautiful Starlight Theatre.

Big Bend National Park

Big Bend National Park is a magnificent travel destination loaded with wonder and breathtaking views. Hike through the natural beauty of the Chisos Mountains, take a refreshing dip in the waters of the Santa Elena Canyon, explore the Fossil Discovery Exhibit, and camp out beneath a brilliant starry sky.

No matter where you’re going, you can always count on a quality rental car from Avis to transport you and your loved ones safely. Visit any of our car rental locations to get your road trip started!
