Hana Highway Road Trip From Kahului

The island of Maui is a tropical paradise, full of rich history, scenic beaches, panoramic coastlines, dense rainforest, and mystical waterfalls. The Road to Hana, or Hana Highway, is famous for its long, winding road as well as its many beautiful sights and stops. There are almost more worthwhile places to stop than you can take time to see on this road trip, but below we’ve pointed out some of the destinations that you simply cannot miss.

With a Kahului Airport car rental at your disposal, all of the wonders of Maui are yours to enjoy with ease.

Kahanu Garden

While there are many waterfalls and scenic stops along the Hana Highway, everyone should stop to see Kahanu Garden. At the Kahanu National Tropical Botanical Garden, the native flora of the Pacific Islands are on full display. While you’re there, don’t miss Pi'ilanihale Heiau, a massive temple made of lava rock, which experts believe to be the largest ancient man-made structure in Polynesia.

Wai'anapanapa State Park

Have you ever seen a beach with black sand? If not, you’re in for a real treat! Over hundreds of thousands of years, Maui’s rugged volcanic coast bestowed fine black pebbles on the beaches of Wai’anapanapa. Not only that, but the volcanic rock has formed blowholes, caves, a natural sea arch, and anchialine pools for you to explore. According to legend, Wai’anapanapa Cave served as a hiding spot for a Hawaiian princess who fled her abusive husband.

Hana Town

Because of its isolation, Hana has remained a small, undeveloped town. It has changed very little over the years, so it offers a glimpse of what some call “real Hawaii.” There are several restaurants in town that are perfect for a lunch or dinner stop. If you want, you could spend the night in one of Hana’s hotels. You can learn all about the cultural and legendary history of Hana at the Cultural Center and Museum. Or, if you prefer to take it slow, you can simply enjoy some rest and relaxation time at the pristine Hana Beach Park.

Seven Sacred Pools at Ohe'o

Your journey doesn’t have to end at Hana; keep heading east on the highway and you will reach the Seven Sacred Pools at Ohe’o, part of Haleakalā National Park. The clear waters of the Seven Sacred Pools are connected by cascading waterfalls, and nestled in a lush bamboo forest. According to the national park service, swimming in the pools is no longer allowed, due to rockslides. However, a series of hiking trails allow you to explore and enjoy this serene and enchanting corner of Maui.
