Travel Destinations Along the Baja California Peninsula in Mexico

The Baja California peninsula offers a gorgeous mix of natural beauty, rich culture, and exciting travel destinations. Starting at either the Tijuana Airport Cross Border Xpress location in San Diego or at a Tijuana car rental location, you’ll drive a rental car down to Bahía de Los Ángeles using the same route to get there and back and will find plenty of places to visit along the way.

Museum of the Vine and Wine

From the Tijuana International Airport, you can drive your rental car down to Guadalupe to explore one of the classiest travel destinations along this road trip. The Guadalupe area is responsible for producing around 90 percent of Mexico’s wine. As you tour the museum, you will come to appreciate the strong winemaking tradition in the region and the hard work that goes into the production of the classic drink.

La Lobera

Next travel south to La Lobera, a sea cave, where you’ll find one of the best places to view sea lions. The roof to this sea cave collapsed, which gives visitors a perfect view of an underground beach where sea lions come to rest.

Enjoy the beautiful views of the Mexican coastline during your visit, and head over to San Quintin or El Rosario for dinner and lodging.

Bahía de Los Ángeles

The final stop before driving back to Tijuana is Bahía de Los Ángeles. The bay offers a wide variety of water sports including kayaking, windsurfing, fishing, and more. If you visit during the summer, you may even catch a glimpse of the whale sharks that come to visit.

The region is also considered an archaeological and paleontological hotspot, with prehistoric rock paintings known as Pinturas Rupestres de Valle Montevideo in the area being estimated at around 10,000 years old.

Traveling Between the US and Mexico

Planning a road trip that crosses the border comes with a few considerations. For the most updated information, refer to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection and/or the U.S. Department of State.

The necessary documentation will depend upon your mode of travel. If you intend to fly into Tijuana International Airport and fly back into the United States, you’ll need to bring your passport. If you fly into San Diego and then drive into Mexico, a U.S. Passport card should suffice. You will not need a Tourist Visa unless you visit for more than 180 days.

If you are traveling with children under the age of 16, you may choose to bring their birth certificate (original or copy), a Naturalization Certificate, or a Consular Report of Birth Abroad. Please note: If both parents are not traveling with the child, you must bring a notarized letter stating both parents’ consent to the trip.

Additional requirements and restrictions may apply to those who are not citizens of the U.S. Make sure all needed documentation is gathered before your trip.
