Top Travel Destinations For a Southern Utah Road Trip

The State of Utah has just about every kind of terrain that an adventurer could want. However, most visitors flock to the beautiful and unique red rock landscapes of Southern Utah. Moab is a hub for desert explorers, as it is nestled securely next to two national parks. If you fly into the Salt Lake City Airport, visit our SLC car rental location and head south. Browse through our car guide to find the right model for your needs and in a matter of hours, you’ll be in the middle of one of the greatest outdoor playgrounds on earth.

Arches National Park

Moab, UT 84532

One of the best known national parks in the country, Arches is a red rock haven just outside of Moab. Home to over 2,000 natural stone arches, as well as other rock formations, this park has novel sightseeing at every turn. Arches is a hotbed of unique desert life, such as the biological soil crusts, and microscopic organisms in an ephemeral pool.

Arches has dozens of hikes for trekkers of every skill level. Most visitors make the three-mile journey to see Utah’s most iconic sight, Delicate Arch. Once you reach the arch you can walk right underneath it for an excellent photo op. Other popular trails include Balanced Rock, Devil’s Garden, Double Arch, and the Fiery Furnace.

Canyonlands National Park

Moab, UT 84532

Canyonlands is, as the name suggests, full of captivating canyons. Sightseers can enjoy the wonder of the canyons on foot, mountain bikes, horseback, and even off-road vehicles. The most accessible quadrant of the park is Island in the Sky, a mesa with cliff walls over 1,000 feet tall. There you can enjoy several hiking trails and camping areas. If you stay the night, don’t go to sleep without looking up at the stars—Canyonlands has the stamp of approval from the International Dark Sky Association, an organization dedicated to preserving the natural night sky.

Dead Horse Point State Park

UT-313, Moab, UT 84532

Featuring breathtaking panoramic views from 2,000 feet above the Colorado River, Dead Horse Point is another popular travel destination near Moab. Local legend has it that the point got its name from cowboys who used it to corral mustangs. According to the story, cowboys stranded a group of wild horses on the point, and they died of thirst. You can take in the sights of the desert landscape and coursing river by day, and enjoy the unpolluted stargazing at night. Dead Horse Point is also a Dark Sky Park.
