Top Destinations for an Arizona Road Trip
Phoenix is now the country’s fifth-largest city, and that means that there are fun opportunities for miles around. After you pick up your PHX car rental from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, start your road trip from this bustling city and hit the open road. With the convenience of our car rental services, the hardest part will be deciding which places to visit on your road trip. Here’s a recommended Arizona road trip route to see a ghost town, the Grand Canyon, and Four Corners National Monument.
Jerome, AZ
Jerome, AZ 86331
Touted as the largest ghost town in the United States, Jerome is only two hours north of Sky Harbor Airport and perfect for the first stop on our road trip. The town was founded in 1876 around the largest copper mine in the country at the time. When the mine closed, the 15,000 residents moved on, but someone had the idea to keep the town alive with tourism and there are many fun things to do in Jerome today. Many of the buildings and facades look the same as they did over a hundred years ago, there are ghost tours available, and part of the town has been preserved as a historic state park. Chances are you’ll never visit somewhere quite like Jerome.
Grand Canyon
Grand Canyon Village, AZ 86023
When you’ve finished exploring Jerome it’s time to head north. The Grand Canyon is even more breathtaking in person than it is in pictures or videos, and it may be the best destination on our Arizona road trip as it is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. We’ll be heading to the Grand Canyon South Rim given our itinerary, and that makes sense because it’s the part of the park that’s open all year. The rim trail is an easy hiking trail that offers incredible views without too much exertion. When you’ve had your fill of striking natural beauty, get back in your rental car and head northeast for another unique road trip experience.
Four Corners National Monument
597 NM-597, Teec Nos Pos, AZ 86514
The Four Corners National Monument is, of course, the place where the borders of four states meet (Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico). Take a picture with the famous monument as you stand in all four states at once. The symbolic unity of this monument is shown in a visitor’s museum where you can learn about the history of each of the states. Navajo cultural activities are frequently available, and you can buy Navajo food and jewelry at the nearby shops. The beautiful desert landscape also has many areas for picnicking, camping, and hiking.
