Can you take a rental car to Mexico?Yes, it is possible to rent a car in the U.S. and drive it into Mexico at select Avis locations. To do so, you must be a U.S. resident and have a corporate AWD (Avis discount number). Avis does not allow customers to pick up a car in the United States and return it in Mexico. |
U.S. to Mexico Car Rental Details
Avis allows rental cars to travel into Mexico for customers who meet all of the following conditions:
You are a U.S. resident.
You are renting through a corporate account (you must have a corporate Avis Worldwide Discount number).
You are renting from a location that allows travel into Mexico.
You notify the rental agent that you plan to take the rental car into Mexico.
You purchase the special insurance required for driving in Mexico. This insurance is available only at Avis locations that allow travel into Mexico.
You return the rental car in the United States (one-way travel into Mexico is not allowed).
The Avis locations that allow travel into Mexico are found only in states that share a border with Mexico: California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas.
How to Check if Your Avis Location Allows Travel to Other Countries
To find out if the Avis location you wish to book with allows travel into Mexico, visit their location page and scroll down to the Terms & Conditions section. Then click on “Travel Into Other Countries” for specific requirements and details.

Can you cross the border to Canada with a rental car?Yes, certain cars are available to rent in the U.S. and drive into Canada as long as you have made arrangements with Avis in advance. You will also need to obtain a Non-Resident Insurance Card when you pick up your car. Based on availability at your location, a one-way rental into Canada may be allowed. |
U.S. to Canada Car Rental Details
Many Avis locations across the United States allow travel into Canada with no restrictions. Just make sure to tell your rental agent about your travel plans so they can provide you with a Non-Resident Insurance Card, also known as a yellow card. This card verifies you have auto insurance for travel in Canada.
Can you rent a car in the U.S. and return it to Canada?
One-way travel from the U.S. to Canada is only permitted at select locations near the U.S.--Canada border. Travel rules vary by location, so always check the Terms & Conditions before booking, as outlined above.
